Entertainment Weekly has the first official portrait of Daniel Day Lewis in character as Abraham Lincoln in Lincoln, Mr Spielberg’s epic biography of The Great Emancipator. It also stars Sally Field, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, who’s in everything, remember, Tommy Lee Jones, John Hawkes, the great Hal Holbrook, James Spader, Tim Blake Nelson, David Strathairn, Jackie Earle Haley and David Oyelowo. The screenplay is by Angels In America’s Tony Kushner and my excitement levels cannot even be measured.
The first photo of Russell Crowe as Noah as surfaced. I like his leather fingerless gloves. Very Madonna. Crowe is currently filming the Darren Aronofsky epic in Iceland, as all of his Twitter followers know only too well, and earlier Aronofsky Tweeted this picture, saying it is a childhood dream come true. That is either the Ark under construction or an extension to Russell’s on-set gym.
We will have to wait until 2014 to flock two-by-two to see this epic.
In Olympic news, were you also struck by Sanya Richards-Ross’s perfect grooming when she took Gold in the women’s 400m? That glamorous weave… the earrings and the mega-engagement ring and those funky – what are those? “armwarmers”?
That’s because girlfriend is a freshly minted reality TV star, don’t you know. Richards-Ross struck a deal in Hollywood just before leaving for London to star in her own reality series with her husband, football star Aaron Ross, who has just signed a $15 million three-year contract with the Jacksonville Jaguars. Their new series will follow the often intense rivalry between this couple of over achievers as well as a behind-the-scenes look at Richard-Ross’ inner circle that includes her mother Sharon acting as her agent, her father Archie working as her manager and her sister Shari as her business partner.

It’s a little-known fact that Abraham Lincoln didn’t become America’s greatest President and fight the Civil War to free the slaves – he did all that to kill the vampires, because they were eating all the slaves! It’s a little-known fact because it never happened, of course. That’s just author Seth Grahame-Smith stretching out the lucky strike he had with his Pride And Prejudice And Zombies best-seller, but while that one was deliciously original and funny, here he and director Bekmambetov play it absolutely straight, which is a little disconcerting for a movie with such a ridiculous premise. Like a History Channel biography with vampires. But you know, as ridiculous as it is, it doesn’t completely, er, suck. (Sorry.) Newcomer Ben Walker is a charming screen presence and Bekmambetov’s staging of the action sequences is all Frank Miller-comic-book graphics, which fans of that sort of thing should appreciate. Ultimately it’s a movie made for 10-year-old boys, though, which is just silly, really, since all the gruesome bloodletting got it slapped with a 16V age restriction.
Hands up who wants to see Jessica Biel’s fashion parade as she promotes her new flick Total Recall? Too bad, here it is anyway… Launching the movie at Comic-Con in San Diego last month Jess chose Thierry Mugler’s white PVC pencil skirt, which was nice and kinky to match the movie, but she paired it with a washed-out white T-shirt instead of the dramatic red structured shell top Mugler showed on the runway. The future Mrs Timberlake sure has a knack for dulling things down.
And talking about dull, that teal-blue-and-pink Roland Mouret “Angel” dress she wore to chat to Jay Leno on The Tonight Show last Wednesday did nothing for me. Or her, unfortunately.
She did a lot better on Jimmy Kimmel Live the next evening in this bright one-shoulder Preen Resort 2013 dress. In fact, Boring Biel even made the dress look more glamorous than the original model did because her stylist shortened the skirt and did a little something with her hair, at least. Maybe she just likes Kimmel more than Leno!
This weekend she and Colin Farrell officially launched the flick in L.A. and Jess chose a pretty sequinned knit dress from the master, Oscar de la Renta, for the photocall and news conference. Since the overall effect was a tad dull (once again) Jess brightened things up a bit with a gorgeous matte red lip…
The big Hollywood premiere was Tuesday evening and Jess selected a beeeeutiful cotton-candy-pink tailored strapless dress from the brand new Dior Couture Fall 2012 collection. At least, it was beeeeutiful on the runway. Too long, Jess! Or Jess’s stylist. Look how perfectly it hits the model between the knee and the ankle… And those massive Tom Binns necklace and earrings? This dress doesn’t need all that…
I won’t want to talk about this animal-print Giambattista Valli Pre-Fall 2012 thing at The Daily Show with Jon Stewart. At all.
And at a special screening in New York last night Biel chose a white lace Elie Saab dress from his exquisite Spring 2012 Couture collection. It was ethereally beautiful on the model on the runway but then Jess’s stylist went and lined it and added a fussy white lace shawl and turned it into a mother-of-the-bride outfit. Sigh.
Khloe Kardashian-Odom says she would looove to be a co-host of the American X-Factor. Now that Simon Cowell has filled his judging chairs with Britney and Demi Lovato he’s gonna need to cast his hosts soon and Mrs Odom is one of the names being thrown around. “To be on such a huge show like that with those judges, I would have so much fun doing that,” says Khloe. And she’s doing some fine sucking-up to try to secure the gig! “I love Simon!” she gushed to reporters at a launch of a new cocktail last night. “I think he’s amazing. I love personalities like that because I’m someone who is very straightforward and I tell it like it is. That’s what he’s doing. He just doesn’t want to blow smoke up people’s asses.” Like she’s clearly doing…
Elsewhere in the wonderful biz of show, Snoop Dogg, or “Snoop Lion”, as he renamed himself this week, says he would love to judizzle American Idol! “I’ll do American Idol!” the D.O.G.G. blurted out during an interview this week to promote his new album Reincarnated, now that Mariah Carey has been confirmed as a new judge.
Not surprisingly, though, the Idol producers are not saying a word…
Not. A. Woooord….
Yesterday I told you how Sir Ridley Scott is bravely pushing on with a new project called The Day Britain Stopped despite my scathing criticism of his Prometheus, but he’s actually already hard at work on his next flick, The Counselor, already and this one I already like! It was written directly for the screen by acclaimed author Cormack McCarthy (No Country For Old Men, The Road) and deals with a lawyer who gets in over his head when he defends a drug dealer and it stars Brad Pitt [in character, above] and Michael Fassbender! Penélope Cruz co-stars along with her husband, Javier Bardem, and the future Mrs Pitt, Angelina Jolie, is reportedly looking at making it a double date with the Bardems with a cameo appearance. Cameron Diaz and the always-interesting John Leguizamo are also on board so colour me officially psyched.
